Good Morning Everyone,
1 Thessalonians 4:13 (ESV)
13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.
Perhaps you’ve been wondering where the daily devotions from ScriptureLives have been. Perhaps you already know.
My name is Josh, I’m Joel’s son – the one you’ve read about so many times on this devotional. My father loved writing these devotions for your encouragement and edification in the Lord. It was a sincere blessing for him to know that thoughts and scriptures that were on his heart were something that would help you as well.
According to God’s good and perfect plan, my dad went home to be with the Savior he loved and loved to write about the morning of Tuesday, July 23rd. His death was sudden and unexpected, the result of a massive pulmonary embolism.
As a family we are grieving and still really in shock. My father was young – 67 years old – and we all were anticipating many more good years with him. We take comfort in knowing that he is in heaven now and enjoying all of the joys that come with being there. As you already know, my dad’s faith was very real and because of his faith in Jesus Christ as his one and only savior, less than one second after his earthly life ended, his eternal heavenly life began. As they say, he is “safe in the loving arms.”
2 Corinthians 5:5-9 (ESV)
5 He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.
6 So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord,
7 for we walk by faith, not by sight.
8 Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
9 So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.
The suddenness of dad’s passing prompts me to ask you a question that my dad often asked. Have you put your faith in Jesus Christ as your one and only savior and Lord? Have you accepted the free gift of salvation offered by God to you and do you have the assurance that one second after you die you will be in the presence of Christ in Heaven?
Romans 10:9-11 (ESV)
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”
None of us are guaranteed another day or even another breath. This is not a decision that should be put off. Today is the day of salvation.
2 Corinthians 6:2 (ESV)
2 For he says, “In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.
Today, as you consider God’s Word, as you believe in Christ Jesus, your Savior, your risen Lord, rejoice at the gift of peace with God and that you can indeed be a redeemed child of God.
Psalm 116:15 (ESV)
15 Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.
Thank you so much for faithfully reading my father’s posts. Let me encourage you to honor his memory by remaining faithful in your own daily scripture reading and study. Thank you also for your prayers for me, my sisters, our family, and of course his wife Becky during this difficult time.
I’ll leave you with one of the last prayers that my dad wrote for all of you.
Prayer – Almighty God and Father, precious Lord and Savior, you promise that blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted. It’s a promise we cling to Father, when the loss of a loved one is over-whelming, we have assurance from you of salvation through Christ. And we know from your Word, that those who die in the Lord will be with you in heaven for all eternity. Thank you Lord for that comfort and hope we share with all believers that though we mourn their loss now, it is only temporary until we are raised imperishable to eternal glory. Be with us Father as we cling to your promises and praise and bless you for your grace and salvation won by the death and resurrection of your Son, our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen and Amen.
May God bless you richly as you dwell on his word.
